At Catholic Charities Fort Worth (CCFW), we believe every mother and child deserve the chance for a healthy beginning. That’s why our Transportation team is proud to assist the Tarrant County Maternal and Infant Health Coalition in their mission to reduce maternal mortality in our communities.
Through this initiative, we are partnering with Catholic Charities Dallas to distribute cases of iron supplements to participating healthcare providers and nonprofit agencies across the region. This effort addresses a critical need in maternal health and pregnancy outcomes.
Why Iron Supplementation Matters
- 70% of severe obstetric complications (SOCs) in the DFW area are linked to blood transfusions.
- Iron helps prevent anemia, supporting safer pregnancies and deliveries.
- A Parkland study showed approximately a one-third reduction in transfusions with direct iron supplementation.
By providing universal iron supplementation, the Coalition hopes to reduce SOCs by 20% over the next three years. This program has the potential to reach up to 20,000 women, making a meaningful impact on maternal health in our community.
Who Is Eligible?
- Expectant mothers in any CCFW program (both Tarrant and non-Tarrant County residents)
- Expectant mothers employed at CCFW
In addition, Texas Christian University (TCU) will be conducting a study to track the long-term outcomes of these efforts, helping us better understand the effectiveness of this intervention for years to come.
At CCFW, we are grateful to play a role in such an important collaboration. Together with our partners, we are taking concrete steps toward ensuring stronger, healthier futures for mothers and infants across North Texas.
